Brattonsville

We have had fun lately taking "Staycations". It's a fairly new word that has been coined to either take day trips from your home, do things in your own town or very own backyard.


I mentioned recently that we went to York, Brattonsville, and Rock Hill, SC. Brattonsville is very historical and 30% of the Patriot, starring Mel Gibson, was filmed there. It was a fun day of walking through the old plantation that was in the film, eating at a cafe in town and shopping the antique shops.
Now, let me take you back in time to Brattonsville.

There's lots of photos, so I may have to do two posts. You still may get bored. lol

This pic hangs in the visitor center on the property where the filming took place.

Interesting history.

Schoolhouse on the property. Isn't so cute and quaint. We couldn't believe they allowed us to take pictures inside the house. I was a happy camper.

A children's bedroom in the main house. I believe this is where the oldest son, in the movie was taken when he came home wounded.

This is the house that the British soldiers burned (in the movie) where Mel Gibson's sister-in-law lived. It dates back to 1820.

This is the dining room where the little boy hid under the tablecloth and some children hid in the cupboards evading the soldiers.

In real life the Bratton family had twelve children and added this larger dining room years after the original house was built. Approx. 1840

The kitchen was a separate bldg. outside the dining room door away from the house. There was a re-enactment going on and this couple was making bread and jam that day.

She was showing me how back then they put a chicken in this tin box facing the fire on a spit. (No, it didn't turn by electricity back then) smile. They manually turned it periodically and the metal would reflect the heat and help cook it evenly. This box was not a replica.
