Laura Ingalls Wilder's Home

I love the Little House on The Prairie television series. I say love, because I still watch it. I turn it on when I am on the walk -fit or other machines doing my exercise.
We had a chance to see the house where Laura and Almanzo lived and raised Rose, their daughter. They had a son that died at 12 days old and never had any other children.
Laura Ingalls Wilder moved from Minnesota when her daughter Rose was 7yrs. of age after a friend brought back a huge, red tasty apple from a visit to MO. The Wilders saw a vision of having an apple orchard of their own and moved there in 1894. In Sept. of that year they purchased Rocky Ridge Farm.
Below is the sign that greets visitors to the house and museum. No pictures were allowed in any of the buildings. To my regret, I can't share pictures of the furnishings that were made by Almanzo, or the pretty, delicate china and tea sets that Laura had.
The sign below explains the history. The first is the front of the sign and the 2nd is the back side.

This is the front of the house which was added years later.

The small, low part of the house on the left is the one room they built and lived in for some time before they added on. It was the kitchen and bedroom all in one.
Laura was only 4' 11" tall and Almanzo only 5' 2'' so the counters in the kitchen were very low.

The had quite a bit of land for their orchards.

Rose grew up to be a published author and world traveler. She was awarded $10,000 for a piece she wrote and decided to buy her parents a new home about 1/4 mile from the Rocky Ridge homestead. This was a Sears catalog home. Yes, Sears and Montgomery Wards had homes you could purchase from their catalog. Isn't that funny. She paid $1,200 for it and then added upgrades for a grand total of $1,500.
This house had 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living room and dining room. It also had closets that no other house in the area had. People came to visit just to see the closets.
Rose encouraged her mother (Laura) to write about her life. This is where Laura wrote her first book, "Little House In The Big Woods." The rest is history.
See plaque below:

This is the front of that house.

The back view.

With all the modern conveniences that this house had, the Wilders were not comfortable living there and after a few years they returned to Rocky Ridge.
We were able to see a film where she was promoting her book and heard her voice. We saw so many interesting things that we could not photograph. We thoroughly enjoyed the visit.
Thanks for stopping by. I hope you're having a good week.

What a great post! I also love watching the show and have many happy memories watching it every week with my dad. My dad usually ended up crying whenever Charles would cry. I cannot believe they were that short. Never heard that before. Seems like a great place to visit!

I just caught up on your posts from your trip to Missouri. It all looks like the makings of a great time. Laura Ingalls Wilder's home looks like a place I would enjoy visiting. Too bad you couldn't take pictures inside, but maybe one day I will get there and have a peek for myself :)
Thanks for your recent comments. I am sorry to hear that both your brother and sister are fighting cancer. I will keep them in my prayers and, of course, Ceekay is already in my prayers.

How interesting. I have loved the Little House books since I was in grade school and our teacher read them to us. I was disappointed when the TV series came out because they changed some things. I got used to it though and loved that too. I didn't know Laura was so short. That must be why Pa called her Half Pint.
Thank you for sharing. I would love to go there. Too bad you couldn't take pictures inside.
Hugs,
Charlotte

OH! I LOVE Laura Ingalls. I love the entire Little House series. I think - other than Nancy Drew - that was the one set of books I couldn't check out of the Library fast enough!!
I never pictured her house looking like this!!!!
This is awesome!
When we were in So Dakota this past summer, I discovered that Ma and Pa and Carrie are buried there - but way over on the east side, so we couldn't go. I would've loved to visit their graves.

I have a favor to ask of you, but I can't do it over our blogs. Is there any way you could send me your Email address? Mine is Kdecapite@gmail.com
Thanks!

I have also been to Mansfield. Wonder place to see, & feel the history. Was very disapointed we could not take pictures. Wished we would have known that ahead of time. Luara was a wonderful person, wish there were more like her.

I wish I could of seen her home too but I'm more interested in her childhood home!! Like did she really have her own window & was the initials really on the fireplace??? I've read her books when I was little! I wish I could of known her!!! She saw our world change!!! The 1st car, phone, & indoor plumbing!! She could of told me what it was like when the Titanic sank!! I wonder if she drove a car!!! I have so many things I'd ask her!!! I too lost a son & want to know how she got past the pain??? I was only 3 yrs old when her daughter passed! I would of liked to talk to her as well!!!
