A Special Item in Our Bedroom

This week for Show & Tell Kelli asked us to feature something in our bedroom. I was just waiting for the right time to post something that I'd just found at an estate sale.

My friend, Lynn , hosts estate sales throughout the year but I rarely seem to make it to them. Either they are too far or my schedule just doesn't permit it, for whatever reason. A couple of weeks ago, I was under the weather and not doing a whole lot so my schedule was more free than usual. Her husband called me to give me the heads up on a sale preview for the following day. (It was not going to be advertised till the day after that.) I told myself to get over there and see what they had. I was so glad I listened to myself. (smile)

I had been keeping my eyes open for end tables for our sitting room. (I had mix-matched ones.)

These tables were one of the first things I saw when I got there. I immediately told her to hold them for me while I looked around. They matched my decor and for $50 each I couldn't pass them up. They are old and made by a company named Brandt. Anyone ever hear of that Company.

I then spotted this beautiful tea cart in another room which was in excellent condition. It has a removable tray on top. It matched the color of the tables, so I knew it had my name on it too. (smile)The tables were the last things we were looking for in this room and the tea cart was definitely a bonus at $125. The room is finally complete. (He he, that is, until I find some other little treasure).

Kitchen Canisters

Kelli asked on her blog about our canisters and what we have in them. Honestly, they have the same old things that most of you all have in them.

I have apples throughout my kitchen. It just evolved when guests saw an apple item and then started buying me more apple things as a thank-you for staying here.

My kitchen is white and red with some gingham and some toile and green accents. I'll show more of the kitchen on another blog day.

We are not coffee drinkers -- so no coffee--just sugar
The next one has flour
The other two has tea. First one has family size tea bags for boiling (to make ice tea0 and the other is herbal tea for hot tea days.
Ceekay is right, it's quiet out there in blog land this week. I hope that means you are on vacation and having a wonderful time.

A Few Things I've Painted in the Toile Room

Thanks for all the lovely comments on my blog this week. I hope your week is going well.
I had company from MI over the weekend and had a wonderful time with my niece, Jenni.

I wanted to share a few more things in the blue and yellow guest room, that was in my previous post.

Some of them I painted many years ago while living in MI. They all had some blue or yellow in them and have been "living" in this room ever since. A little round birdhouse that was fun to paint and looks springy with flowers growing at the base.

I also painted this wooden box that has children on the doors showing the little boy with a knee injury. They have a first aid book and bandages to dress the wound and put one on the little bear, too. The doors open and--yes I have band-aids in there. (smile)

This is a favorite piece of mine. It's a round box on a stand that has a lower shelf to it. It's children, again, reading their books with their backs propped up to each other, looking so content. Ceekay always has her eye on this and says it's one of her favorites. It sets next to the bed and mirror. I hope you enjoyed your tour. Thanks for stopping by.

Something Homemade

Kelli suggested for Show & Tell today that we post something we've made. There were many items to choose from, being a homemaker for almost 38 yrs. I finally chose the guest room we refer to as the "yellow and blue" room around here.

I made the curtains a few years ago with waverly toile material. In SC they use to have many textile mills, now not so many. One is Laurel Textile Mill that my daughter introduced me to that sells at very discount prices. I think I paid under $6 a yd. for this fabric.

I did the curtains, pillows, and table covering with the toile and changed to a plaid for the pillow shams and little table scarf.



The quilt was a gift from my two daughters for Mother's Day one year.It's the room with the lamp from Germany and the school house clock that I previously posted.

I have two daughters and fell in love with the Victorian lady print, with two little girls in her arms.

I try to have a comfortable chair, table, lighting, misc. toiletries, and afghan to make their stay pleasant.

A little bit of humor

I've been under the weather for a few days and haven't felt like posting . Hubby got this "thing" first and brought it home to me. (I've been sleeping with the enemy). I started thinking of something to post and this came to mind. Enjoy! I'll try to be back to blogging soon, I hope.


The Husband Store
A store that sells husbands has just opened in New York City, where a woman may go to choose a husband. Among the instructions at the entrance is a description of how the store operates:
You may visit the store ONLY ONCE! There are six floors and the attributes of the men increase as the shopper ascends the flights. There is, however, a catch … you may choose any man from a particular floor, or you may choose to go up a floor, but you cannot go back down except to exit the building! So, a woman excitedly goes to the Husband Store to find herself the perfect husband….
On the first floor the sign on the door reads:Floor 1 - These men have jobs and love the Lord.

The second floor sign reads:Floor 2 - These men have jobs, love the Lord, and love kids.

The third floor sign reads:Floor 3 - These men have jobs, love the Lord, love kids, and are extremely good looking.
“Wow,” she thinks, “I should probably stop here!” But she feels compelled to keep going.

She goes to the fourth floor and reads the sign:Floor 4 - These men have jobs, love the Lord, love kids, are drop-dead good looking and help with the housework.
“Oh, my goodness!” she exclaims, “I can hardly stand it!”

Still, she goes to the fifth floor and sign reads:Floor 5 - These men have jobs, love the Lord, love kids, are drop-dead gorgeous, help with the housework, and have a strong romantic streak.

She is so tempted to stay, but she goes on up to the sixth floor where the sign reads:
Floor 6 - You are visitor 4,363,012 to this floor. There are no men on this floor. This floor exists solely as proof that some women are impossible to please. Thank you for shopping at the Husband Store. Watch your step as you exit the building, and have a nice day!

***The Wife Store
There is actually also a Wife Store, right across the street from the Husband Store. It works the same way as the Husband Store - it also has 6 floors, you can enter only once, and there is only one direction to go.
The doors read:
Floor 1 - These women are beautiful.
Floor 2 - These women are beautiful and have money.
What is on the other floors, nobody knows. No man has ever gone past the second floor!

Mirrors

Mirror, Mirror on the wall

These are some of the mirrors around our house that either keep us or company, hopefully, looking good or adds to the decor of the house.

This is in our great room and was on clearance at Kirkland. I love that store! This is our dining room. It came from Bassett.

This is from a furniture warehouse where they buy in bulk and sell wholesale to the public. The store isn't much to look at. The furniture can be piled to the ceiling but the prices are hard to beat! It's in the foyer when you enter the front door.

This is in the master bedroom. Another good find. In the Carolinas there is numerous furniture outlets, which is sooooooo nice! Hickory, NC isn't far from here.

Mother's Day

Where would we be without our mothers? We literally wouldn't be here, would we? No one else can go through the process of conceiving and birthing us. Then comes the nurturing, loving, and endless hours of caring for us.

I just want to pay a little tribute to mine.

She was born in a holler in West Virginia to parents that already had 6 children, and more to come.

Her father worked in the timber business. He never drove, spoke on a telephone, or believed man went into space.

He raised his children in church to believe in God, country and be respectful. I don't remember ever seeing him pray unless he bowed down on one knee. He had Godly parents that taught him well.

They are in the picture below with his mother holding the New Testament and Psalms. They are, of course, my great grandparents. This is my Grandfather and Grandmother on their wedding day.

Many years ago I had a studio make a negative and blow it up, paint it with colors I chose and it is hanging in our family room. It's 10 x 14. I also had one made for my Mom in colors that matched her furniture. That one is a couple of pictures below with a group of family members in it.

Notice hers is painted brown and orange. Mother as she looked when my Dad met her. They were married 6 mos. later.

Mom, you have been a shining example to me and I love and appreciate all you have ever done for me. HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

Rockers

I'M OFF MY ROCKER!

I'd like to be back on it again, literally that is.

Life just gets too busy and we sometimes forget to take time and pleasure in the simple things in life. My husband and I decided to sit in our rockers for awhile on Sat. evening and "people watch". To take time to say hi to the walkers, parents pushing baby strollers, and peoples walking their dogs. (We tend to live out back and don't know whats happening in the front.)

We had two open houses for college grads on Sat. as well as some errands, came back and decided to rock for awhile. It felt good just to be still for awhile, if ya know what I mean. (smile)

With the threat of rain and bad storms I didn't get to pull the rest of my pansies out and put in my summer flowers. We did get all the outside windows washed though.

Let There Be Light

I was looking for light at the end of the tunnel at 8:00 p.m. last night, after working in the yard and flower beds most of the afternoon. I also washed all the outside furniture off, getting it usable. Whewww! What a job.

So I picked an easy show and tell. I thought of all the light I had in my house. Here's just a few. I'd love to see lamps that you might have. I love the finials and lamp shades they have out now.
